Shuangyi Li
Post-Fair Paris
79 Rue de Temple, Booth 26
October 19—24, 2026
For Post-Fair Paris, Sea View presents a new body of work by Shuangyi Li based on the overgrown Parisian garden, where order is subverted by natural disorder, growth, and decay. The garden is already a form of artifice within nature, shaped by attempts at maintenance and control, even as those attempts remain provisional. Li's interest in the garden brings to mind Monet's Giverny– a garden deliberately engineered by the artist to become a subject for his painting. As Peter C. Baker writes, he was “painting nature, but a nature constantly modified in the service of his artistic project.” In Li’s paintings, the relationship between the garden and the painter is complicated further, as is the broader relat ionship between the controlled environment and the autonomy of wilderness. Through dry, dappled brushstrokes, Li interrupts once recognizable forms: moss creeping over stone, foliage obscuring paths, and lus h s igns of human abandonment. Traces of cultivation remain visible, but vegetation pushes back: an all but romantic tension that is repeated in the facture of the paintings themselves. Cultivation produces the garden, nature begins to undo it, and in fixing that unstable arrangement as an image, painting transforms it once again.
In 2024, Li received her BFA from the Slade School of Fine Art, London, UK. Recent solo exhibitions include Sea View, Los Angeles, CA (2026); Hive Center for Contemporary Art, Shanghai, CN (2025); Painters Painting Paintings (2025); and group exhibitions include Commune Gallery, Vienna, AT (2026); Hew Hood Gallery, London, UK (2025); The Artist Room, London, UK (2024); and Chilli Art Projects, London, UK (2024).
